چکیده

During the past few years a number of reports have indicated the therapeutic effectiveness of the new synthetic chemotherapeutic agent trimethoprim (2,4-diamino-5-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl) pyrimidine) used in combination with sulphamethoxazole in a wide range of bacterial infections (Noall, Sewards, and Waterworth, i962; Schneider et al., i965; Akinkugbe et al., I968; Hughes, I969). Staphylococcus aureus shows a consistently high sensitivity to trimethoprim in vitro. This combination has also been effective in a case of endocarditis due to Esch. coli (Fowle and Zorab, I970). This report describes the second case of bacterial endocarditis successfully treated with this combination. However, it is the first published report of the successful use of this chemotherapeutic agent in endocarditis involving prosthetic cardiac valves.

Pseudomonas cepacia endocarditis treated with co-trimoxazole and kanamycin.

An outbreak of infection by Pseudomonas cepacia, previously reported (Speller, Stephens, and Viant, 197i), arising from contaminated aqueous chlorhexidine solutions, included two cases of endocarditis affecting recently-inserted prosthetic mitral valves. The bacterium was resistant to most chemotherapeutic agents, but treatment with a combination of co-trimoxazole (trimethoprim plus sulphametho...

Esch. coli endocarditis successfully treated with oral trimethoprim and sulphamethoxazole.

A 42-year-old patient was successfully treated for subacute bacterial endocarditis due to Esch. coli with oral trimethoprim and sulphamethoxazole. The treatment lasted nine months and was continued through a period of cholestatic jaundice superimposed on hepatic damage due to subacute bacterial endocarditis. There were no toxic effects attributable to the two antibacterials despite their prolon...

Bacterial Endocarditis and Periodontal Disease

Bacterial endocarditis is the infection of inner lining of heart and /or heart valves. This disease is usually related to the presence of some pathogenic bacteria in mouth, digestive system or urinary tract. Most of the times, this infection happens in people with heart problems like the presence of prosthetic valves, history of previous endocarditis, some congenital heart defects and heart tra...

Chronic Q fever endocarditis.

Eight patients with chronic Q fever endocarditis were treated with tetracycline for up to 40 months. In addition, five of these patients received co-trimoxazole. Six patients had prosthetic valves. Two patients who had Q fever endocarditis on their native valves required valve replacement because of haemodynamic difficulties: in only one did the Q fever endocarditis contribute to the haemodynam...

Paravalvular leak of a mechanical mitral valve prosthesis associated with Burkholderia cepacia subacute endocarditis: a rare case successfully treated by multidisciplinary approach

Prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) represents an uncommon and very serious complication after heart valve surgery. Prosthetic valve endocarditis occurs in 1% to 6% of patients with valve prostheses and affects both mechanical and biological valves [1]. Up to 34% of all cases of infective endocarditis involve prosthetic heart valves. Prosthetic valve endocarditis represents a nosographic entity...
